Meghan Markle is NOT Wallis Simpson

A Different Bird

Just stop it.

Meghan is American! Divorced! She stole our beloved Prince and wore a similar dress and parts her hair in the middle just like Wallis Simpson!

Please just stop and listen to yourselves British Media. This is embarrassing, lazy and harmful. And, you know it. Stop it.

Yes, fine. Meghan and Wallis were both 34 when they met their British princes. They were both Americans. They were both divorced. And that’s about where the similarities end.

Stepping back from senior Royal duties is very different than abdicating an actual throne.

Moving to Commonwealth Canada for privacy is vastly different than being exiled to obscurity because they hobnobbed with Hitler.

Equating a socialite Nazi sympathizer with a Global Ambassador for World Vision, the largest International children’s charity is ridiculous.

The two women could not be more different.

Meghan Markle is not Wallis Simpson. Oh but, you want her to be.

After Prince Harry announced his engagement, it took no time at all for you all to paint Meghan as another American interloper, an outsider infiltrating the Monarchy and possibly set on stealing another British Prince away. Is History repeating itself?

While Americans rejoiced in our real-life Princess Diaries fairytale, you eagerly dug up the old story of Wallis Simpson and demanded everyone remember the Would-Be Love Story turned British National Tragedy.

Public Protest against Wallis Simpson and Abdication 1937

At first, it was tepid. Headlines like, “What Meghan Can Learn from Wallis Simpson” or some such drivel. Then came the onslaught, a trickle turned avalanche of character assassinations and weak, unwarranted comparisons to Ms. Simpson all over the Commonwealth.

It couldn’t just be a modern fairytale could it?

Last January when the Duke & Duchess made their announcement to step back from Royal Duties, the uproar was heard all the way across the pond and into our social media feeds.

The Wallis suspicions were coming true! History WAS repeating itself!

Meghan is manipulating Harry! It’s so obvious! She deliberately stole our beloved Prince! She’s been planning this the whole time!

Oh, and she wore a similar dress and parts her hair in the middle just like Wallis Simpson so that’s all the proof we need…

VERY Startling Similarities Between Meghan Markle & Wallis Simpson - Daily Mail

Do I even have to point out that the fact that Meghan wore a dress that was vaguely similar to one of the many dresses a rich American socialite in the 30’s wore for a portrait one time is one of the weakest comparisons I’ve seen so far. Or their choice in hats or sunglasses.

Also, the fact that in 2021 center-parts are popular again just…doesn’t…count.

But, the similarities from the biggest Royal story of the last century were just too tempting weren’t they? The British folklore too easy to tap, prejudice too easy to stoke. Add in some casual racism and biased reporting for drama and you struck gold. You’ve been doing this for decades, why fix something that works every time?

Once it took off, the story was too good to let go. The intrigue, the manipulative American woman and the powerless British Prince.

The comparisons only went as far as fashion but you could work with that. Facts didn’t matter, drama did.

It didn’t really matter that Meghan was embraced by the Royal Family (Wallis was not).

It didn’t matter that Meghan embraced the job of Royal and respected British Royal traditions (Wallis did not and loudly).

It didn’t matter that Prince Edward VIII was the heir to the actual throne and crowned King (Harry is not, was not and is 6th in line).

And this bears repeating: Wallis and Edward were effectively banished because of a scandal involving Nazis.

“The Other American” article by Hugo Vickers for The Independent

No, none of those facts mattered. The British Princes past, present and future must be protected at all costs.

The original American Villainess was low hanging fruit and so you conjured it back from the dead like a lazy necromancer, creating a zombie Wallis Simpson to haunt Meghan and Harry forever.

And, so they left. After getting abused for so long, what exactly did you expect?

Now with the Oprah interview finally revealed you’re back to your tired old Wallis trope.

Even with the vulnerable & emotional revelations from Sunday night’s interview with Oprah, today’s British Media & Twitter reactions prove this Wallis Simpson story isn’t going to be put down. If anything, it’s getting ramped up.

Tweet from Piers Morgan Sunday 3/7/21 after the Oprah Interview.

Apparently, it doesn’t matter that Harry and Megan tried to make it work. (Who wants to read that?)

It doesn’t matter that they didn’t want to leave. (The reader can’t empathize with the Ultimate Villain now!)

It doesn’t matter that the covert racism in “The Firm” and lack of mental health support was suffocating and dangerous. (But, Meghan is the Villain!)

Strikingly, it also doesn’t matter that Harry, a grown man, is portrayed as someone who can’t make his own decisions for his family or emotionally protect his wife. (It’s obviously Meghan’s idea because Harry would never want to leave his HOME!)

Nevermind the context of his mother’s tortured relationship with you, British Media and the well documented chilliness from the Royal Family.

But, the Royal Family can’t be the Villains in this story any more than you can. So, Meghan it is.

You kept this battery going non-stop for 4 years and you finally got what you wanted: A fake Wallis Simpson to hate with countless clickbait stories for cash.

So congratulations, British Media. You did it.

Through your relentless efforts to protect your beloved Prince from the “New Wallis Simpson”, you chose to vilify the woman he loves and drove them both away.

Your plan backfired spectacularly, didn’t it?

The irony of self-actualization is not lost.
